Ending the War on Islamic Radicals

Johann Hari's piece in the The Independent today highlights the two key pieces to the War on Terrorism:

1. The more the US invades and bombs Muslim countries and tortures and denies fair trials to Muslim suspects of terrorism, the more radical, violent Islamic fundamentalists are effective in their recruitment of young men and women willing to die for the cause.

2. The more American progressives fight these imperialist policies at home, the less stimulus for moderate Muslims to radicalize.

This report echoes the same findings that the Pentagon found 5 years ago: "Muslims do not 'hate our freedom,' they hate our policies."

And this kind of journalism highlights the grain of the universe unveiled in the teaching and ministry of Jesus the crucified and resurrected One:

‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. (Matthew 5:38-42)

In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

Prophetic American Christians embrace a way that isn't just radical, obedient and right. Sometimes it's pretty damn pragmatic. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work on 'Christian' policies that reflect our Lord...and that actually work.
